After much anticipation, the new American Horror Story season title has finally been revealed to the public: Cult. Ryan Murphy, writer and producer of FX’s American Horror Story, suggested the infamous 2016 Presidential Election would be an influence in this season of the show. While many were eager to see how he would pull this off, many others were turned off by the idea. New interest was sparked after the release of the first teaser of the season during the AHS event at Comic Con on July 20th. A group of clowns seemingly parade around a woman who sticks out from the rest of them. What could possibly come next?
Although much detail for the new season has been kept under wraps, we do know that the show has a political edge this season. In an interview with E! Online, Murphy revealed “the first 10 minutes of the season, this season, takes place in a very eerie macabre way on election night and there’s something terrible that happens in the lives of our characters on election night as they’re watching it all go down.” He also mentioned the opening would feature real-life election footage of Donald Trump and Hilary Clinton. Murphy explained he is not interested in just a single-minded point of view; his goal is to share all sides without favoritism.
Murphy has also taken to Instagram to post a few hints as to what the new season may consist of. Many of which include drawings, computer graphics, and even a picture of Twisty the Clown whom we met in Season 4; Freak Show. Last year Ryan told us that all the seasons were somehow intertwined, so his Instagram posts could hint to a new relation.
Viewers can expect some familiar faces during the new season, as well as some we have not seen on the show previously. Evan Peters, Sarah Paulson, Cheyenne Jackson, Adina Porter and Frances Conroy have all been confirmed to return for Season 7. Murphy has also promised viewers they will get to see more of Peters claiming this would be “his heaviest season yet”. Although we are unsure whether Peters will play a hero or a villain, we do know the character he will be playing is named Kai and he will be sporting blue hair.
Murphy has confirmed via Instagram that Colton Haynes would be joining the Season 7 cast as well as Billie Lourd. He has previously had the opportunity to work with both actors on MTV’s Scream Queens. He took to Twitter to confirm that Lena Dunham would also be apart of Season 7 and appear in at least one episode. AHS will also be welcoming newcomers, Billy Eichner, Alison Pill, and Leslie Grossman.
Despite their prior popularity on the show, Lady Gaga and Jessica Lange will not be returning for American Horror Story’s reinstallment.
When Ryan Murphy revealed on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen that Season 7 would be influenced by the 2016 Presidential Election, many people were nearly irritated with the show’s direction. Viewers took to the American Horror Story official Facebook page to express their various opinions. Many claimed that as an entertainment series, American Horror Story should stay away from politics and political opinions. However, a few were willing to be open minded about the information they were given and supported the show in hopes it would not come along with a political agenda. There are much fewer positive comments in regards to the upcoming season, but many are still hopeful that Murphy will impress audiences this season.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Murphy stated “What I’m interested in doing is not just the obvious, single-minded point of view but rather express all sides of that equation, we may not always agree with each other and we may be horrified by what the other side is doing, but we have to move toward understanding”.
It was made clear by Murphy that a political agenda is not what he is after, but that his agenda is in creating “something that will thrill the audience like never before.” Stay tuned for seven additional trailers released before the season premiere date of September 5th.
