One of the greatest series of this decade ended last night. It was a big day for HBO – across the various HBO platforms the final episode of the fantasy series drew 19.3 million viewers, with the previous episode drawing 18.4 million viewers. 13.6 million people watched 9 p.m. HBO broadcast on TV alone, breaking the previous 13.4 million viewer record set by “The Sopranos” with its Season 4 premiere in 2002.
However, there has been much discussion about the episode, with many considering it to be an underwhelming end to a highly anticipated season. The series finale ranked in at 50% from Rotten Tomatoes, making it the most disliked episode in the series history. The season itself drew a score of 69% from critics and 37% from the audience.
Either way, its the end of an era for a breath-taking fantasy epic that captivated us for nearly a decade. While it is fair to say many long running series often have controversial endings, let’s see how Game of Thrones will remain in our memories after the initial reactions have settled.
