It’s official. In spite of all delays and dismissive responses, Deadwood is green lit for a movie set to begin shooting this fall.
For those unfamiliar with the series, Deadwood was a popular western by HBO which took place in the town of Deadwood, South Dakota. Despite high ratings, the series only ran for a total of three seasons. Almost twelve years after the last episode, HBO green lit a long-waited revival of the series.
The announcement was made by HBO programming president, Casey Bloys, at the Television Critics Association (TCA) summer press tour. He stated that “all these people worked hard to get this (Deadwood) together”.
Previously in 2017, it was announced that a script for the movie was finalized by writer David Milch, and submitted to programming president Bloys for review.
With the amount of time that has passed since the final episode and new demographics to consider, Bloys commented that “I wanted a script that would stand on its own, that if you were a ‘Deadwood’ fan, it would make you happy and if you had never watched ‘Deadwood’, you would still enjoy it.”
The cast included Ian McShane, Timothy Olyphant, Molly Parker, and John Hawkes in the HBO series. No word yet on the cast of the new movie, but after a long waited return, fans are just eager to see what comes next.
